PMI Bulgaria Chapter Celebrates Earth Day with "The New Forest of Sofia"
On Saturday, April 25, members of the PMI Bulgaria Chapter community traded their laptops for shovels to participate in a meaningful environmental initiative near Bankya. This event served as our local celebration of Earth Day (observed globally on April 22), turning our professional commitment to excellence into a tangible contribution to a greener planet.
Understanding Earth Day: A Call to Professional Responsibility
Earth Day is more than an annual event; it is a global reminder that our responsibilities as project professionals extend beyond meeting deadlines and managing budgets. According to the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, responsibility is our duty to take ownership of the decisions we make regarding the resources and the environment entrusted to us. For our community, this means recognizing that the best project outcomes are those that are also ethical and sustainable.
Sustainability: A Core PMI Mission
At the heart of the PMI vision is the goal of maximizing project success to elevate our world. Sustainability is no longer a secondary consideration but a primary theme of modern project management. The PMBOK® Guide 8th Edition elevates sustainability to a core principle, urging practitioners to integrate eco-friendly practices throughout the project life cycle to minimize negative environmental impacts.
By participating in this initiative, our Chapter is operationalizing these values. As a Finalist for the 2025 PMI Global Chapter of the Year, we strive to turn structured planning into a force for social and environmental good. We believe in stewardship – preserving and enhancing the long-term well-being of our community through active engagement.
The Initiative: "The New Forest of Sofia"
Our team joined the Sofia Municipality’s ambitious initiative, “The New Forest of Sofia,” which aims to create a green belt of thousands of new trees to improve the city’s air quality and biodiversity. Working together in the fresh spring air of Bankya, our volunteers helped plant the seeds for a sustainable legacy that will benefit generations of Sofia residents.

This impact was only possible because of the “Together We Can” spirit that defines our community. We want to extend a massive thank you to the around 20 volunteers – including both community members and Board of Directors representatives – who dedicated their Saturday morning to this cause.

Whether you were digging, planting, or coordinating logistics, you embodied the leadership and responsibility that make the PMI Bulgaria Chapter a vibrant and purpose-driven community.
